SAN DIEGO (Aug. 30, 2012) – FOX Sports San Diego kicked off their After-School All-Stars San Diego (ASAS-SD) partnership Monday, August 27 with a formal check presentation of $50,000.
ASAS is a leading non-profit organization that provides comprehensive programming to middle school children in 13 cities across the U.S. Greater San Diego After-School All-Stars serves more than 4,000 students in 20 schools throughout San Diego County by providing free academic assistance, extracurricular enrichment programs, and sports activities five days a week. Its mission is to provide free, quality comprehensive after-school programs that keep children safe and help them succeed in school and in life.
Prior to Monday's Padres match-up vs. the Braves, Henry Ford, senior vice president and general manager of FOX Sports San Diego, presented Tyree Dillingham, executive director of ASAS San Diego, with the $50,000 sponsorship check on-air during the Padres Live pre-game show held at Petco Park’s “Park at the Park”.
“We’re delighted to support such a wonderful program. After-School All-Stars does so much for the youth in our communities. We see this as a natural way for FOX Sports to help make a difference among school aged children and teens in San Diego,” said Ford.
The entire Padres vs. Braves telecast focused on After-School All-Stars and the impact the organization has on the youth of this community. The evening began with a special edition of Padres Weekly which featured two ASAS students, Myra and Jeff, and how the program has influenced their lives.
“Funding for after-school programs is needed now more than ever before, and the support that FOX Sports San Diego has given will help bring after-school programming to more students in need and contribute to their future and the success of our entire community,” said Tyree Dillingham, executive director of San Diego After-School All-Stars. “We’re so grateful for FOX Sports San Diego’s contribution and for the once-in-a-lifetime experience they have created for our students with the Padres tonight.”
Students currently enrolled in ASAS's programs participated in the on-air instructional held at the whiffle-ball field at Park at the Park and enjoyed the game in FOX Sports San Diego's seats throughout the ballpark. Three chosen students from San Diego's Monarch School, a public K-12 school exclusively for students who are homeless or are at risk of becoming homeless, received the ultimate game-day experience. These students enjoyed the game from FOX Sports San Diego's premium seats hehind home plate and were given behind-the-scenes access to FSSD's broadcast booth and television truck.
