By John Ourand, Staff Writer

Charter has signed a long-term distribution deal to carry FS New Orleans on an expanded basic tier, just in time to carry the Hornets’ season opener tonight. The deal with Charter, the area's third largest distributor, gives FS New Orleans full distribution in the market with more than 2.5 million homes in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. Last year, Charter carried the Hornets' previous rights holder, Cox Sports TV, on a sports tier.

Bornstein’s Late Scores Drive NFL Network

With distribution set, CEO’s focus turns to programming

By Jon Lafayette -- Broadcasting & Cable, 10/29/2012 12:01:00 AM

THIS HAS BEEN A GREAT YEAR for Steve Bornstein, CEO of the NFL Network and executive VP of media for the league. The network was launched in 2003, and it took until this year to get the last two major cable operators signed up to carry it. Now it has a broad distribution, a full lineup of 13 regular-season games, and so far this season, primetime viewership is up 455% from last year. Bornstein spoke with B&C business editor Jon Lafayette about the state of the network and where it goes next.

UGA vs. UK Posts Record Rating for College Football on FOX Sports South

On Saturday, October 20th, the University of Georgia vs. University of Kentucky game posted a record high rating for a college football game on FOX Sports South with a 10.13 HH (Atlanta DMA).

Top 3 College Football Ratings on FOX Sports South
10/20/12 – Georgia @ Kentucky – 10.13
9/25/10 – Georgia @ Mississippi State – 9.75
10/15/11 – Georgia @ Vanderbilt – 8.97

A combination of off channel marketing, OAP, traditional and social media awareness initiatives promoted Saturday's pair of Georgia games on FOX Sports South.

Seven billboards in the Atlanta DMA featured Saturday's "Georgia doubleheader":

Takeover graphics were created to promote the games prominently on FOXSportsSouth.com and the FOX Sports South Facebook page.

On Air Promotions previewed Saturday's match ups on FOX Sports South:

Through social media channels:
  • FOX Sports South social media channels including Facebook and Twitter posted frequent tune in messages and worked with the schools’ athletic departments to share tune in messages via their channels as well, such as this tweet from the UGA Athletic department to their 61,000 followers, that received 154 retweets, 20 "favorites" and several responses.

  • The FOX Sports South Girls tweeted and posted tune in, excitement, and anticipation messages throughout the week. For example, this Facebook tune-in post on Friday before the games received 74 Shares and over 100 Likes.

  • At a FOX Sports South Girls appearance on Saturday morning, a video tune in message was recorded with former UGA Bulldogs pitcher (and Atlanta Braves top draft pick), Alex Wood,  and then posted on Facebook, YouTube and Twitter.

  • The FOX Sports South Girls posed for photos and videos wearing Georgia Tech and UGA gear, to promote awareness and drive tune in for both games.  Photos such as the following were posted with tune in messages across social media channels leading up to game time.

In addition to a heavy social media push, FOX Sports South talent conducted several interviews leading up to Saturday's games to raise awareness for the "doubleheader" of Georgia games.  Tim Couch (SEC analyst and SEC Gridiron Live), James Bates (SEC Gridiron Live and The NEW College Football Show), and Elizabeth Moreau (SEC sideline reporter and SEC Gridiron Live) conducted interviews with sports talk radio stations in Atlanta, Savannah, Charlotte, and Lexington, and the stations incorporated our game day message points throughout the interviews.

Time Warner Cable clashes with Cox over SportsNet distribution

October 25, 2012 | By Steve Donohue
Add fellow cable operator Cox Communications to the list of pay TV distributors criticizing Time Warner Cable (NYSE: TWC) for demanding monthly fees of nearly $4 per subscriber to carry its new Time Warner Cable SportsNet channel.

Last year, Time Warner Cable signed a $3 billion, 20-year rights deal with the Los Angeles Lakers. It flipped the switch last month on SportsNet, a regional sports network that will carry more than 80 Lakers games each year. But with the Lakers season set to tip off on Tuesday, the MSO hasn't signed a single carriage deal with cable operators, telcos or satellite TV providers.

Executives at Atlanta-based Cox scolded Time Warner for demanding exorbitant fees--reportedly $3.95 per subscriber monthly--to carry ISportsNet. "I think it is extremely expensive for basically a one-team channel,"
Cox SVP Dave Bialis told The Los Angeles Times.

Time Warner Cable also has rights to games from the Los Angeles Sparks, a WNBA franchise, and the LA Galaxy, a pro soccer team. In addition to SportsNet, it's distributing games from the three teams on a Spanish-language version of the channel, called Time Warner Cable Deportes. But its most valuable programing are games featuring the Lakers, were NBA champions in 2009 and 2010.
Cox and top satellite TV provider DirecTV (Nasdaq: DTV) have asked Time Warner Cable for the option of carrying SportsNet on a sports tier. But the MSO scoffed at that idea.

"Cox and DirecTV know that there is no regional sports network anywhere in the country that is offered on an optional tier--that would be unprecedented. If Cox or DirecTV choose not to carry our networks, we and their customers will be very disappointed but we are confident there will be other alternatives for their customers to see this highly-anticipated Lakers season," Time Warner Sports said in a statement issued late Wednesday.

While Time Warner noted that it expects there will be alternatives for Lakers fans, SportsNet still lacks deals with Dish Network (Nasdaq: DISH), AT&T's (NYSE: T) U-verse TV, Verizon's (NYSE: VZ) FiOS TV and Charter Communications (Nasdaq: CHTR).

Cox's public dispute with Time Warner Cable isn't the first time that the nation's second largest cable MSO has clashed with a fellow cable operator this year over a regional sports network. Time Warner Cable went nearly seven weeks without carrying MSG, the regional sports network controlled by Cablevision (NYSE: CVC) CEO Jim Dolan, until agreeing to a carriage deal in February.

Millions of Laker fans face blackout

Key distribs not on board for new Time Warner network
Halloween is poised to be truly frightening for swaths of Los Angeles Lakers TV viewers.
Wednesday brings the regular-season debut for Time Warner Cable's two channels dedicated to the region's most popular sports franchise. But as far as carriage negotiations between the provider and distributors including DirecTV, the mustard is off the hot dog, as legendary Laker broadcaster Chick Hearn would have said.
The dispute echoes the stalemate between DirecTV and the Pac-12 Networks, which remain absent from the leading satellite provider in Los Angeles, two months into the 2012-13 college sports season. That has meant no shortage of grumbling in the area, but that figures to turn into a full-throated roar if the Lakers don't find their way into full distribution next week.
"We're in continuous discussions with Time Warner Cable SportsNet to figure out how to carry the channel in a way that's affordable for everyone," a DirecTV spokesman said Thursday. "Time Warner Cable and DirecTV are the two largest TV providers serving Los Angeles, and as such both share a responsibility to ensure that both fans and non-fans alike avoid any extraordinary increases to their families¹ monthly bills."
Carriage disputes are common in the current television age, but historically find speedy resolution once key deadlines arrive. But the Pac-12 scenario, combined with the recent 3 1/2-month breach between AMC and Dish that only resolved Sunday, offers some reason for pessimism.
Time Warner Cable defended itself Wednesday against arguments that -- at a reported monthly $3.95 per subscriber -- it was overcharging for Time Warner Cable SportsNet and Spanish-language companion Time Warner Cable Deportes, citing its own experience as a buyer in the marketplace. The channels also carry Los Angeles Galaxy soccer games and selected high school and college sports.
"Any assertion that we are the highest-priced regional sports outlet in the country is simply untrue," Time Warner said. "As a significant buyer of regional sports across the country, we know that there are higher-priced regional sports networks, including Root Sports that we buy from DirecTV."
However, DirecTV isn't alone at balking at Time Warner's current stance. Outside of Time Warner Cable and Bright House Networks, the Laker-themed channels remain locked out of Dish, Cox Communications and Charter. Combined with DirecTV, that accounts for more than 4 million subscribers, more than half of the total households in the area that pay for television.
In this, the first season in decades that no local Laker broadcasts will appear on over-the-air station KCAL, fans of the team with cable or satellite won't be left entirely in the lurch. More than a third of the Lakers' regular season games -- along with all potential playoff games for a team that features Kobe Bryant and All-Star imports Dwight Howard and Steve Nash -- will be aired on national networks, starting with Tuesday's season opener on TNT.
In its own statement, Cox suggested making the Laker networks available in a la carte fashion.
"The price for the Lakers is one of the highest wholesale prices that we have seen, especially when you consider it on a "per game" basis," Cox said. "We are working through the negotiations process with Time Warner Cable SportsNet and hope we can come to an agreement that does not burden our customers with excessive price increases. We have offered to carry their channels on our optional digital tiers, which would enable those who want to pay for the programming to have it."
That notion is a nonstarter with Time Warner.
"Cox and DirecTV know that there is no regional sports network anywhere in the country that is offered on an optional tier -- that would be unprecedented," Time Warner said. "If Cox or DirecTV choose not to carry our networks, we and their customers will be very disappointed, but we are confident there will be other alternatives for their customers to see this highly anticipated Lakers season."
While Time Warner Cable would happily accept defectors from the satcasters, their overall goal remains broad exposure for the nascent sports channels, which were borne from a $3 billion, 20-year deal with the Lakers.
Among the long-range implications of the Lakers channels dispute is how it will affect the future of baseball's Los Angeles Dodgers on cable in Southern California. Fox is in an exclusive negotiating window with the Dodgers to extend their deal, but should the expiration date at the end of November pass without a pact, that would open the door for Time Warner to try adding the Dodgers to their twin networks and create an even more powerful offering for local viewers.

Political Campaigns Target Local Sports to Deliver Message

Filings show how campaigns use sports in local markets to target undecideds
In the weeks leading up to the Republican National Convention, viewers in Tampa who tuned in to the Summer Olympics learned that Usain Bolt was the world’s fastest man, that Gabby Douglas could defy gravity and that Mitt Romney had a plan to put Americans back to work. September, fans watching football in Cleveland saw their Ohio State Buckeyes win five times, their Browns lose four times, and President Barack Obama approve this message 166 times.

Campaign advertising has taken over the airwaves as never before this presidential election season, with analysts estimating that television spending by the two sides and the political action committees that support them will exceed $1 billion, almost all of it pouring into a dozen battleground states set to determine the winner.

Fox Sports Net holds the local rights to 14 NBA teams, meaning that it produces more than 1,000 NBA telecasts each season. It’s up to Hamilton to make sure that the productions carry a similar look and feel whether they are in Los Angeles (Clippers) or Miami (Heat).

Hamilton gained fame in the late 1970s as a basketball player for UCLA — he was one of legendary coach John Wooden’s last recruits. Now, he has made his name behind the camera, providing quality control to make sure that FSN’s interests and the NBA’s interests are aligned in terms of TV productions.

Retrans Revenue Expected to Reach $6 Billion by 2018

By Robin Flynn

We have updated our industry retransmission fees projections, and now expect that TV station owners retrans fee revenues could reach $6 billion by 2018 versus the $2.36 billion projected this year.

As of 2015, we are projecting that retrans revenues could reach $4.28 billion versus the $3.9 billion in our November 2011 forecast, indicating an increase in the projected numbers versus our last forecast. By 2015, that $4.28 billion approaches 10% of the total $43.0 billion that multichannel operators are projected to pay in affiliate fees to basic cable and regional sports networks.

FSN to Stop Distributing "Dan Patrick Show" This Week

Fox Sports Networks said it will not distribute "The Dan Patrick Show" after tomorrow. The two sides failed to reach an agreement that would have FSN continue to distribute the show to more than two dozen affiliates. Fox Sports VP/Communications Chris Bellitti said, "We thought we were a good fit for the show considering our broad distribution across the country, but unfortunately, we couldn't agree on terms for a new deal. Instead, we view this as an opportunity to develop a consistent block of collegiate programming featuring the best games from the prior weekend."

DirecTV produces the show, but it has relied on FSN to distribute it to RSNs across the country. A source says the show still is in talks with other potential distributors, including NBC Sports Group, but nothing is finalized. In August, NBC Sports Group dropped all FSN programming, including "The Dan Patrick Show" from its Comcast SportsNet RSN.
