Longhorn Network Inks Carriage Deal With AT&T's U-verse Service

Longhorn Network signed its biggest carriage deal to date, inking a contract with AT&T's U-verse late Thursday night. The deal comes just before the Wyoming-Texas football game that will be carried exclusively on the channel. Longhorn Network also has the New Mexico-Texas game on Sept. 8. The network, which is owned and distributed by ESPN, has had trouble convincing cable and satellite operators to carry it. Remaining holdouts include Time Warner Cable, Comcast, DirecTV or Dish Network.

Meanwhile, Dish Network's deal to carry Big Ten Network expires as of Saturday, and the two have yet to reach a new agreement with the conference's football teams set for their season openers this weekend.

Major League Baseball's next TV deals could reshape landscape

August 30, 20122:35 p.m.

The next television deal Major League Baseball strikes has the potential to radically alter the media landscape.
Depending on how the talks play out, CBS could have baseball for the first time in almost two decades or Fox could acquire rights to even more games and use them to launch a cable sports channel that would look to challenge Walt Disney Co.'s ESPN.
Fox carries regular season baseball as well as a the All-Star game, one of the two league championship series and the World Series. Turner Broadcasting's TBS also carries regular season baseball, the divisional playoffs and a league championship series. Both the Fox and Turner deals are up at the end of next season and Major League Baseball wants to have a new deal in place before the end of this season.
Major League Baseball is trying to consolidate its postseason games with one rights holder. The catch is that it also wants to ensure that the World Series remains on broadcast television.
That means if TBS lands the package that includes all of the postseason, it will need a broadcast partner for at least the World Series and probably the All-Star game as well. Turner has reached out to CBS about teaming up on baseball. The two are already partners on the NCAA basketball tournament.
But CBS getting back into baseball is a long shot, people close to the situation said. Major League Baseball would want CBS to carry more than just the All-Star and World Series and that's probably a nonstarter for the Eye network.
A more likely scenario is Fox scoring more postseason baseball and using some of that along with a portion of its regular season games to finally move ahead with its oft-discussed plans to rebrand its extreme sport cable channel Fuel into a broad sports network.
Another wild card in all these situations is how aggressive NBC will be in going after baseball. Not only would NBC like baseball for its low-profile NBC Sports Network, it probably wouldn't mind having games to put on its broadcast network as well, which is struggling.
The problem for NBC is that it is already committed to professional football on Sunday nights, which would create scheduling conflicts with postseason baseball.
Earlier this week, Major League Baseball wrapped up an eight-year, $5.6-billion deal with ESPN that included additional regular season games and one playoff game.

Fox Sports San Diego Lends Support to After-School All-Stars with $50,000 Sponsorship

SAN DIEGO (Aug. 30, 2012) – FOX Sports San Diego kicked off their After-School All-Stars San Diego (ASAS-SD) partnership Monday, August 27 with a formal check presentation of $50,000.

ASAS is a leading non-profit organization that provides comprehensive programming to middle school children in 13 cities across the U.S. Greater San Diego After-School All-Stars serves more than 4,000 students in 20 schools throughout San Diego County by providing free academic assistance, extracurricular enrichment programs, and sports activities five days a week. Its mission is to provide free, quality comprehensive after-school programs that keep children safe and help them succeed in school and in life.

Prior to Monday's Padres match-up vs. the Braves, Henry Ford, senior vice president and general manager of FOX Sports San Diego, presented Tyree Dillingham, executive director of ASAS San Diego, with the $50,000 sponsorship check on-air during the Padres Live pre-game show held at Petco Park’s “Park at the Park”.

“We’re delighted to support such a wonderful program. After-School All-Stars does so much for the youth in our communities. We see this as a natural way for FOX Sports to help make a difference among school aged children and teens in San Diego,” said Ford.

The entire Padres vs. Braves telecast focused on After-School All-Stars and the impact the organization has on the youth of this community. The evening began with a special edition of Padres Weekly which featured two ASAS students, Myra and Jeff, and how the program has influenced their lives.

“Funding for after-school programs is needed now more than ever before, and the support that FOX Sports San Diego has given will help bring after-school programming to more students in need and contribute to their future and the success of our entire community,” said Tyree Dillingham, executive director of San Diego After-School All-Stars. “We’re so grateful for FOX Sports San Diego’s contribution and for the once-in-a-lifetime experience they have created for our students with the Padres tonight.”

Students currently enrolled in ASAS's programs participated in the on-air instructional held at the whiffle-ball field at Park at the Park and enjoyed the game in FOX Sports San Diego's seats throughout the ballpark. Three chosen students from San Diego's Monarch School, a public K-12 school exclusively for students who are homeless or are at risk of becoming homeless, received the ultimate game-day experience. These students enjoyed the game from FOX Sports San Diego's premium seats hehind home plate and were given behind-the-scenes access to FSSD's broadcast booth and television truck.

Time Warner Cable and CBS make games for distribution deal

Time Warner Cable found an unusual way to land programming for its regional sports channel in Southern California.
College football and basketball games from San Diego State, University of Las Vegas and Fresno State will appear Time Warner Cable SportsNet, which launches in October and is already home to the Lakers and the Galaxy.
To get the rights, Time Warner Cable had to do a little wheeling and dealing with CBS. According to people familiar with the matter, CBS Sports Network, a cable channel that focuses primarily on college sports, agreed to swap the rights to the games in return for greater distribution on Time Warner Cable systems. As a result of the agreement,  CBS Sports Network is expected to add 1 million subscribers, which would bring its national reach to almost 50 million homes.
Time Warner Cable and CBS declined to comment on the pact.
CBS has been looking to beef up its sports channel. Although it is unlikely that it will go after big-ticket items such as Major League Baseball (whose contracts with Fox and Turner Broadcasting are up after next season), it is adding more personalities such as popular radio host Jim Rome to its lineup. The channel is also used as a promotional platform for sports that air on CBS, such as theNFL, golf and college basketball.
For Time Warner Cable, the deal gives it one more selling point with distributors, which it needs.
Time Warner Cable's SportsNet, which comprises both an English- and Spanish-language channel, is yet to close distribution deals with satellite broadcasters DirecTV and Dish, both of which have a big presence in Los Angeles.
The subscription fee Time Warner Cable is seeking for the two channels is about $3.95, which would make it one of the most expensive media properties for distributors.
Interestingly, while Time Warner Cable is trying to beef up its own sports network, it still isn't carrying the NFL Network or the Fox-owned regional sports channel in San Diego.

Dodgers and Angels Ratings Soar

The Dodgers on Prime Ticket and Angels on FOX Sports West are posting big ratings increases in the Adults 25-54 demo. Compared to the 2011 final deliveries, the two teams have shown the biggest gains amongst all O&O MLB teams in this demo category:

The Dodgers have been making recent headlines in the trade market, which have translated into a demo ratings growth of 148% (compared to the 2011 season final). While the additions of Shane Victorino and Hanley Ramirez have certainly sparked the fan base, it was the recent blockbuster trade, headlined by Adrian Gonzalez, that will certainly keep driving this current ratings trend upward. To encapsulate the impact of the recent acquisitions, last weekend's telecasts on Prime Ticket saw an audience growth of 46% in households and 87% in the A25-54 demo (compared to the current season average prior to the weekend).

With no surprise, the Angels ratings are greatly attributed to the on-field successes of Mike Trout and Mark Trumbo. Their youthful presence, combined with superstar Albert Pujols' second half surge, have brought in a much younger audience composition posting a 105% increase in the A25-54 demo (vs. the 2011 season).

To capitalize on the above ratings trends, both RSNs are using various marketing, production and social media tactics to reach this younger audience...

Sources: ESPN Secures MLB Rights In Eight-Year, $5.6B Deal

ESPN has agreed to a deal that locks down MLB rights into the next decade, according to several sources. The eight-year deal is worth $5.6B (an average of $700M per year), approximately doubling the nearly $306M ESPN currently pays MLB every year for domestic TV rights. The new deal adds in digital, international and radio, for which ESPN is paying MLB around $50M currently, sources said. Sources added the deal will be announced as soon as this afternoon. As part of the deal, which runs through ‘21, ESPN retains the rights to "Sunday Night Baseball," its Monday and Wednesday night games and highlights for "Baseball Tonight."

ESPN also will carry one Wild Card playoff game, sources said. In its current deal, ESPN does not have rights to any MLB playoffs. As part of the deal, ESPN adds more digital rights, the rights to show games in-progress and some radio and international rights. ESPN also picked up rights to carry games featuring more popular teams, like the Yankees and Red Sox, more frequently.

FoxSports.com charging back into fantasy football

FoxSports.com is attempting an aggressive re-entry into fantasy football after a series of high-profile setbacks, rolling out a new gaming platform and backing it with cross-platform promotion.

The rebuilt Fox Fantasy Football is being supported by WhatIfSports.com, the Cincinnati-based creator of online sports simulations and fantasy games that Fox bought in 2005.

Yahoo Sports, ESPN, CBS Sports, and NFL.com dominate the mainstream fantasy football industry, and are estimated to collectively hold more than 80 percent of the entire market for league management services. With relatively little subscriber churn between competing fantasy providers, FoxSports.com at best can likely aspire to fifth position in the marketplace, at least in the near term.

But given the boost that fantasy football can provide for a website’s traffic and engagement numbers, FoxSports.com and WhatIfSports.com executives said they couldn’t go forward without a meaningful presence in the space. The FoxSports.com fantasy football games, like most key competitors, will be free to play.

“We really want to get into the top three of the market. We know we’re not going to get there overnight. It’s going to be a gradual thing. But that’s our goal,” said Tom Zentmeyer, WhatIfSports.com president and Fox Sports director of interactive games. “If the last seven or eight years had gone differently, we’d be having a different conversation. But we have confidence we can get to that position.”

FoxSports.com had been aligned with Open Sports for its fantasy football services. The Mike Levy-led operation initially made a splash, but after struggling with cost controls and failing to find sufficient audience or advertiser support, Open Sports folded early last year after less than three years of operation.

FoxSports.com in 2005 suffered a series of major technical failures with its fantasy football games during a watershed season for the industry at large in which many games converted from fee-based to free and consumer interest skyrocketed. The technical issues eroded confidence among many consumers and helped drive them to competing outlets.

The new FoxSports.com fantasy football games have already been supported on-air extensively during Fox’s regional and national TV baseball coverage, and its preseason NFL broadcasts, and that will continue into the early fall. Microsoft’s MSN, already a key partner of FoxSports.com, also is playing a significant role in the marketing of the games.

“Fox certainly has a challenge on their hands after trying and generally failing over the past decade to deliver a meaningful product,” said Paul Charchian, Fantasy Sports Trade Association president. “And in the case of ESPN and Yahoo, the main competition for free leagues, they’ve both got really battle-tested, full-featured products that people know, and people tend to stick with what they know.

“Having said all that, Fox has tremendous reach, particularly through their NFL game [coverage]. And with new players continuing to come into the market, that’s likely going to be a big inroad for them.”

Elisabeth Murdoch Slams 'Profit Without Purpose'

Elisabeth Murdoch, daughter of News Corp. NWSA -0.93% Chief Executive Rupert Murdoch, declared on Thursday that "profit without purpose is a recipe for disaster," drawing a distinction from views expressed by her brother James.
Ms. Murdoch said in a speech at an Edinburgh television festival that her brother "left something out" when he told the same event three years ago "the only reliable and perpetual guarantor of independence is profit."
Reuters
Elisabeth Murdoch during a rehearsal of a lecture given at the Edinburgh International Television Festival.
"It is increasingly apparent that the absence of purpose—or of a moral language—within government, media, or business, could become one of the most dangerous…goals for capitalism and for freedom," she said, delivering the annual James MacTaggart Memorial Lecture at the Edinburgh Television Festival, whichJames Murdoch gave in 2009 and Rupert Murdoch has also delivered.
Ms. Murdoch is chairman of News Corp.'s U.K. television production firm Shine while her brother James is News Corp.'s deputy chief operating officer. The Murdoch family controls News Corp., whose properties include The Wall Street Journal. James Murdoch couldn't be reached for comment. News Corp. declined to comment.
Ms. Murdoch's comments come in the wake of the phone-hacking scandal at News Corp.'s U.K. newspaper unit which caused the closure of the News of the World newspaper, the resignation of several senior executives and the arrests of numerous employees. James Murdoch has been caught up in the scandal, as he oversaw News Corp.'s U.K. newspaper unit between 2007 and 2012.
Ms. Murdoch, 44 years old, made only an indirect reference to the scandal, noting that "obviously News…is currently asking itself some very significant and difficult questions about how some behaviors fell so far short of its values. Personally, I believe one of the biggest lessons of the past year has been the need for any organization to discuss, affirm and institutionalize a rigorous set of values based on an explicit statement of purpose," she said.
Regarding the scrutiny of the media industry over the last year, Ms. Murdoch suggested to bear in mind the philosopher Voltaire's words: "with great power comes great responsibility."
And referring to the Leveson inquiry into British media practices, she noted that "when there has been such an unsettling dearth of integrity across so many of our institutions, it is very difficult to argue" for "light touch media regulation."
She also distanced herself from her brother on the role of the British Broadcasting Corp. In his 2009 speech, James said the BBC, which collects an annual license fee from U.K. households, had an unfair advantage over commercial media companies. On Thursday, Ms. Murdoch said "let me put in on the record that I am a current supporter of the BBC's universal license fee." She also spoke positively about the BBC's digital efforts, saying it "seems to be the furthest ahead in understanding that our new world demands new ecosystems."
Ms. Murdoch quoted from her father's version of the McTaggart Lecture, saying he had inspired her with his words about the role of broadcasting.
Ms. Murdoch implored the television industry to adapt to digital change or risk losing a valuable connection with its audience, making an analogy to the shift of consumers from broadcast television to pay television.
"Let's not be like the broadcast networks in the United States and come late again to the party that other people are having with our audience," she said. "Unlike the decade it took many in this room to adapt to the reality of multichannel television, we don't have that much time." News Corp. owns the Fox broadcast network.
Ms. Murdoch said more high-quality original content on websites will be a true competitor with television. Citing material shown on Google Inc.'s GOOG -0.06%YouTube, she said "believe at your own risk that their platform is based on homemade videos of cats in washing machines."
Ms. Murdoch said the key risk was that media companies failed to create lasting ties with consumers that would prevent them from walking away, as in the experience of CDs and digital music. "We seem to have got the emphasis wrong between building a community and selling a commodity," she said.

Top MSOs record largest Q2 revenue gains since 2008

While the cable industry in the second quarter faced multiple obstacles — including seasonality, a sluggish economy and aggressive competition from DBS and telcos — publicly traded operators reported healthy top-line gains, increased operating cash flow and a higher ARPU. And while basic video customers fell 1.1% sequentially,advanced-services trends remained on the upswing.

The seven operators in our table collectively grew revenues by 6.2% to $19.80 billion from $18.65 billion in the second quarter of 2011, improving on the 5.2% annual growth posted in the second quarter of 2011.

ExcludingSuddenlink Communications, for which we do not have financial metrics prior to 2008, these companies saw their largest combined year-over-year second-quarter gain since 2008.

Operating cash flows grew 5.3% on average, keeping cash flow margins near the 40% mark, although the metric dropped 32 basis points year over year, to 39.2% from 39.6%. Looking at the listed operators, however, shows widely different results, with annual margin changes ranging from a fall of 336 basis points at Cablevision Systems Corp. to a gain of 138 basis points at Suddenlink.

FOX Sports Midwest Teams with Veterans Advocacy Group on Community Projects

Robert Wake says he remembers very little of the mortar blast that left him wounded on the roof of a Najaf police station in May 2004. His unit had been engaged in a day long firefight when the mortar round landed just feet away. Injuries from the blast would keep him at Fort Leonard Wood Hospital in recovery for the next year.  Although his injuries would ultimately end a 25-year military career, Robert was undeterred.  He re-enlisted in 2010—but this time, in his community, by serving a Mission Continues Fellowship with the American Red Cross.
Robert has become a recognized leader in his community over the past two years, spearheading many community initiatives for the Red Cross.  This past June, Robert led the second of three community service projects to take place in summer 2012 in partnership with The Mission Continues and FOX Sports Midwest. For the second year in a row, The Mission Continues and FOX Sports Midwest have collaborated for “Summer Service Slam,” a series of veteran-led service projects across Missouri and Illinois.
Each Summer Service Slam project unites FOX Sports Midwest’s passion for baseball and The Mission Continues’ passion for veterans’ service.  Since 2007, Mission Continues service projects have engaged civilians to serve alongside veterans to better their communities. These veteran-led projects empower veterans to feel more connected to their communities and help civilians gain a better understanding of veterans’ service and leadership.
To date, Summer Service Slam projects have engaged over 150 veterans and nearly 700 civilians in service together. Project leaders like Robert Wake include Marine Corps Veteran Nick Holman in Columbia, MO; Army Veteran James Casey in Hannibal, MO; and Army and Navy Veteran Joel Alexander in Rolla, MO.
Each project receives promotional coverage from FOX Sports Midwest, including recruitment spots during St. Louis Cardinals broadcasts. At the project, the FOX Sports Midwest crew is on-hand, led by Cardinals color commentator and U.S. Army Veteran Al Hrabosky. In the weeks that follow each Summer Service Slam, FOX Sports Midwest produces a recap of the project to air during a Cardinals game.
Partnerships like the one with FOX Sports Midwest can provide a model for organizations within Got Your Six to combine resources, creating new avenues to challenge veterans to serve and lead in their communities. Many of the volunteers at each project were not familiar with the organization or the context of our mission prior to the on-air coverage provided by FOX Sports Midwest.  Fox Sports Midwest is worthy of applause for believing in veterans like Army Veteran Robert Wake as civic assets, and for providing the medium to spread the message of veterans’ continued service to millions of Americans across the Midwest.
The final Summer Service Slam of 2012 is quickly approaching. On Saturday, August 18, 2012, veteran and civilian volunteers will gather in Belleville, IL, just across the river from Downtown St. Louis, to refurbish a local softball field. Leading the project will be Marine Corps veteran Steve Wahle.  For more information on how to get involved, please visit The Mission Continues’ website.

FSWisconsin Gets Down & Dirty for A Great Cause

Representing FOX Sports in the community is so important to the staff at FOX Sports Wisconsin, they're willing to crawl through mud (literally) to make a postive impact.
Recently, a team of local FOX Sports Wisconsin staff and clients teamed up for the 'Dirty Girl Mud Run' in Milwaukee  to raise money for breast cancer research.
In matching tee shirts that read:“We Are Fox Sports Wisconsin!  We Are Dirty Girls!” the team of ten represented FOX Sports Wisconsin proudly amongst the 17,000+ participants.

FOX Sports Detroit Girls in the Community

The FOX Sports Detroit Girls participated in the Cheeseburger Festival & Parade of Fools in Caseville, Mich., last Wednesday. Caseville is about two and a half hours north of Detroit. This small town (population: 1,000) welcomes approximately 60,000 people to town for its mid-week parade.
Allison and Lauren took pictures and signed autographs for fans for two hours prior to the parade. The two were featured in the parade and integrated into the concert that evening with an onstage presentation to the winners of the Parade floats.

Most Influential Figures in College Football

College football is a commissioner- and TV-driven property, and recent years have made that message clear. The headlines have been dominated by massive conference realignment, through-the-roof media rights deals, and the landmark move to a four-team playoff starting with the 2014 season. Conference commissioners and network executives have been at the forefront of all of those developments, which is evidenced in this list of the most influential figures in college football.

In 12 months, Freer and Jones have reshaped Fox Sports’ college portfolio. They opened a window on Fox’s broadcast network to show Pac-12 and Big 12 games in prime time this fall. They brought college football back to FX, a national cable platform. Most importantly, Freer and Jones are part of every rights negotiation in the college sports space. What’s next? Fox is expected to make a run at the BCS rights when they go to market this fall, and it will be at the table for Big East rights when those go to market this fall as well.
